What is morality?? Easy it is common sense (period!)
A wiccan friend of mine was once asked by a born-again christian, who was honestly concerned, how ,if we had no 10 commandments to follow, did we know right from wrong. We are all born with a conscience and that little voice tells us right from wrong and what morality is. I don't need a written list of rules to know that murder is wrong, that adultery is wrong, that disrespecting people is wrong, that stealing is wrong; common sense will prevail. Then I told my friend "...but, ah! we do have a commandment of sorts. We have the Wiccan Rede; and in such a short sentence holds all the morality and glory of all wiccandom. "AN' IT HARM NONE, DO WHAT YE WILL." There it is; plain, simple to understand. It is to do what ever your hearts desire but no one is to be harmed by you. I think it pretty much covers everything christian commandments don't; our morality goes deeper than theirs (sorry have to do a little bashing even though it is VERY unwiccan of me) in MY opinion, because we revere the earth and everything on it instead of ourselves and how we can get ourselves to heaven instead of creating a liveable world here for us and our descendants and us again. Stepping down from the soapbox now! :o) |
Ah this one is a hard one to nail down because no matter
who you are there is a hint of predjudice in all of us. I have seen some
wiccans out-and-out violent when it come to the subject of Christians;
proving to me that they themselves are just as religiously-predjudiced
as any christian. I think we need to work on ourselves and our acceptance
of other religions because no matter what you say or do you will not change
other peoples minds; it is theirs to change, not ours. Oh yes we can give
them the RIGHT information about who we are and what we stand fo,r but
remember, they have had it drilled in their heads all their life that any
religion other than Christianity is wrong .It hurts when we are trod upon
by our fellow man just because we choose to to call our God, God and Goddess
and our heaven Summerland; they will be the surprised ones when we walk
up to them there and shake their hand and say welcome. As Herne says, there
are many paths through the forest to get to the same meadow where we will
all be equal. I would love for the prejudices of the world to dissappea,r
but we must be realistic in the fact that it won't, albeit a sad fact.
But I also think, as a community, we can work together and dispell the
myths and, hopefully, if we can get just one person to change their mind
just a little then the effort we put forth is worth it. Attacking them
and being rude and violent is only going to confirm their already steadfast
opinions about what we do and who we are. Be nice, be polite, be the best
of the best of wiccan kindness; and respect their choice of religion just
as you want them to respect your choice.
